How's BioLPG made?

The science of sustainability

It's known as BioLPG because it comes from the biodiesel production process. This is a simple overview of the production process:

Step 1

A fresh start

It all starts with a ‘feedstock’ of waste oils and fats. It needs a series of treatments to clear out contaminants.

Step 2

Separating and purifying

The fuel mix still contains oxygen, which need to be removed. A process called‘ hydrogenolysis’ takes care of that, using hydrogen atoms.

Step 3

Time to refine

During refining, ‘off gases’ are captured. They might sound like something we'd want to get rid of, but they’re the exact opposite.

Step 4

BioLPG

For every tonne of biodiesel produced, 50kg of BioLPG is generated from off gases.

Step 5

A sustainable solution

A final round of purifying, and BioLPG is ready to go to businesses and homes. The best part: it’s chemically identical to traditional LPG, so while carbon emissions come down, performance stays at 100%.

BioLPG is produced by Neste, the world leader in advanced biofuels, and is then supplied by us via our parent company – SHV Energy.  It's manufactured in a custom-built production unit in Rotterdam and is a co-product of the ground breaking NEXBTL biodiesel production process.
Through a method called mass balancing, we keep a close track on the quantities of LPG and renewable BioLPG mixed into our main supply. By opting for a BioLPG tariff, you’re buying into this sustainable mix and a greener future. Over the coming years the mass of the renewable energy injected into our supply will only increase as we move towards this goal.
